insta 360 paragliding holder
My goal was to have a detachable mount for the Insta360. I like to change my POV during flight to create more varied and interesting videos. A single POV gets boring very quickly.
I’ve experimented with a bunch of ideas, some involving Velcro, some with sewn-on pockets, etc., but all of them were problematic during flight. Taking the camera out was easy, but putting it back in was hard. I don’t want to be fumbling with the camera instead of paying attention to flying.
Magnets
I didn’t expect this to work. In theory, it seemed like magnets wouldn’t be strong enough to hold a long stick with a camera on the end. To my surprise, two neodymium magnets were enough to hold the camera fully extended! I used four, just in case.
I first experimented with soft (fabric) magnet holders, but the magnets inside were too strong to stay properly separated. My latest 3D-printed mount is the pinnacle of this exploration ;-).
Ingredients:
- 3d printed magnet holder
Electrical tapesilicon tape- Neodymium magnets 60x10x3mm
the magnets are attached to the invisible stick handle with electrical tape. my prototype is not pretty but very functional. I think this can be done nicer. I wanted to have as thin layer between magnets as possible so there is no overlap of the tape.
update: the tape didn’t survive 40+ degrees in Corryong and I replaced it with silicon tape from bunnings:
The magnet holder has attachments to sew it onto the harness. I put it in the corner at the back of the seat. I can have the camera stashed there for take-off and then easily extend it during flight. The best part is that I can simply grab it, shoot from some other angles, and then put it back, where it snaps perfectly into place.
